Target Information

In mice, LTBP2 (latent transforming growth factor β binding protein 2) primarily contributes to the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the formation of microfibrils, playing a crucial role in the development of ciliary rings. As a significant component of elastic fiber microfibrils, LTBP2 binds to fibrin and is involved in the formation and stabilization of these structures. LTBP2 deficiency in mice results in abnormal ciliary ring formation, leading to lens dislocation, but does not present with typical symptoms such as glaucoma or retinal detachment seen in humans with LTBP2 mutations. In the lungs of mice, LTBP2 plays a vital role in pulmonary fibrosis, particularly in the differentiation of lung fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. LTBP2 also has functions related to heart disease; for instance, knocking out LTBP2 can reduce cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis, and enhance cardiac function by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and reducing oxidative stress.
