Target Information

Transferrins are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe3+ ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Lactotransferrin, a key iron-binding and multifunctional protein, is present in exocrine fluids such as breast milk and mucosal secretions. It exhibits antimicrobial activity, which varies with extracellular cation concentration. Its antimicrobial effects include bacteriostasis, achieved by sequestering free iron to prevent microbial growth, and direct bactericidal actions that result in the release of lipopolysaccharides from bacterial outer membranes. In mice, lactoferrin is involved in various functions, including immune regulation, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, modulation of intestinal microbiota, and regulation of hormone-related gene expression.
