Target Information
Keratin 19 plays a role in organizing myofibers. Along with KRT8, it aids in linking the contractile apparatus to dystrophin at the costameres of striated muscle. Mice lacking K19 display pathological changes in skeletal muscle, including reorganization of mitochondria and the sarcolemma. Specifically, damage occurs to the intermediate filaments, composed of desmin and K19, on the sarcolemma in fast-twitch muscle fibers, resulting in the loss of sarcolemma structure and accumulation of mitochondria beneath it. Additionally, these mice exhibit significant declines in muscle contractile performance, such as reduced specific contractile force, along with myofiber breakage and abnormal calcium ion signaling.
