Target Information
When phosphorylated, Keratin 18 is involved in filament reorganization. It plays a role in the delivery of mutated CFTR to the plasma membrane and assists in the uptake of thrombin-antithrombin complexes by hepatic cells. Together with KRT8, Keratin 18 contributes to interleukin-6 (IL-6)-mediated barrier protection. In mice completely lacking keratin 18, normal intercellular desmosomes form during embryonic development and in simple epithelial tissues. However, as these mice age, they develop liver pathological changes, including abnormal hepatocytes and Mallory bodies containing liver-specific keratin 8-positive inclusions.
