Target Information

Glandular kallikreins are enzymes that cut Met-Lys and Arg-Ser bonds in kininogen to produce Lys-bradykinin. Given its diverse biological functions, KLK1 is being explored as a promising therapeutic target for various diseases. For instance, KLK1 gene therapy has been shown to alleviate symptoms in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease, as well as promote angiogenesis when used topically. In studies involving mice on a high-aldosterone salt diet, those lacking KLK1 displayed elevated blood pressure and heart enlargement, indicating KLK1's significant role in combating high aldosterone-induced hypertension.
