Target Information
Involucrin is a component of the insoluble cornified cell envelope (CE) found in stratified squamous epithelia. It is produced during keratinocyte differentiation and plays a crucial role in the cornified envelope of the epidermis and other squamous epithelia. This structure is vital for maintaining the skin barrier function, providing a physical shield to prevent water loss and protect against environmental aggressors. Mice lacking involucrin show immune responses similar to atopic dermatitis, including reduced infiltration of T cells and γδT cells, suggesting that the absence of involucrin may influence the composition of the skin's immune microenvironment.
