Target Information
Alpha-internexin is a class IV neuronal intermediate filament capable of self-assembly and plays a role in neuron morphogenesis. It can establish an independent structural network or collaborate with NEFL to create a filamentous backbone, which NEFM and NEFH can attach to, forming cross-bridges. As one of the most abundant intermediate filament proteins in the mammalian central nervous system, its expression notably increases during development, particularly in the cerebral cortex and cerebellar granule cells. In adult mice, alpha-internexin is expressed primarily in mature neurons, including cerebellar granule cells, neocortical neurons, and neurons in thalamic nuclei.
