Target Information
Interferon-induced transmembrane protein 2 (IFITM2) is an antiviral protein activated by interferons (IFNs). It functions by inhibiting viral entry into the host cell cytoplasm, allowing endocytosis to occur but preventing subsequent viral fusion and the release of viral contents into the cytosol. IFITM2 is effective against various viruses. Research indicates that IFITM2 can interact with MDA5 to enhance IFN-β production, thereby thwarting the infection of specific viruses. For instance, IFITM2 provides protection against intranasal infection by the encephalitis virus (VSV) in mice, and its absence results in increased susceptibility to the virus, leading to neuropathy and death.
