Target Information
Intercellular adhesion molecule 4 (ICAM-4) is an adhesion protein that interacts with the leukocyte adhesion LFA-1 protein, specifically the integrin alpha-L/beta-2. ICAM-4 also serves as a ligand for the alpha-4/beta-1 and alpha-V integrins. In mice, ICAM-4 primarily functions in the abnormal adhesion of red blood cells to endothelial cells, which can lead to vascular obstruction and disease. For instance, in a mouse model of sickle cell disease (SCD), ICAM-4 and CD36 contribute to the increased adhesion of sickle red blood cells to endothelial cells. This heightened adhesion results from the enhanced expression of ICAM-4 and CD36 on the surface of activated endothelial cells by sickle red blood cells.
