Target Information
The pancreas/duodenum homeobox protein 1 is instrumental in activating the transcription of insulin and somatostatin genes. This protein serves as a crucial regulator of islet peptide hormone expression and is pivotal in pancreatic development. It likely contributes to this development by influencing the maturation and differentiation of common pancreatic precursor cells in the developing gut. Known as Insulin Promoter Factor 1 (IPF1), this homeodomain protein is vital for pancreatic development and the functionality of pancreatic β-cells in mice. In adult mice, IPF1 is predominantly found in pancreatic β-cells, where it plays a role in activating insulin gene transcription by binding to the insulin gene promoter. A deficiency or malfunction in this protein can result in pancreatic developmental abnormalities and may lead to diabetes.
