Inhibins and activins respectively inhibit and activate the secretion of follitropin by the pituitary gland. They play roles in regulating various functions, including the secretion of hormones from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, gonadal hormone secretion, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development, and bone growth, depending on their subunit composition. Inhibins generally counteract the functions of activins. Within the reproductive system, the inhibin α chain helps maintain reproductive function balance by inhibiting FSH secretion. Studies have shown that the inhibin α chain acts as a tumor suppressor in mouse ovarian tumors, with its absence leading to the development of gonadal steroidomas. Furthermore, the inhibin α chain is crucial for follicle development, especially in the early stages. Its expression can directly inhibit granulosa cell proliferation, preventing premature follicle depletion.
