Target Information

In mice, Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is primarily responsible for mediating type 1 hypersensitivity reactions, which play a critical role in defending against helminth parasites. When allergens or parasites are encountered, IgE binds to FcεRI receptors on mast cells and basophils. This binding, followed by antigen crosslinking, triggers degranulation and the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, leading to symptoms such as bronchoconstriction and increased vascular permeability. IgE also plays a role in antigen presentation and can influence immune responses, although its role in non-parasitic immunity is less significant compared to other isotypes. In mice, excessive production of IgE may enhance the immune response against tumors.
