Target Information
In mice, IgD primarily functions as a co-receptor, aiding B cells in more effectively responding to antigens. Although the development and maturation of B cells remain unaffected in IgD-deficient mice, their immune response efficiency is diminished. Specifically, the absence of IgD results in a delay in antibody affinity maturation during the primary immune response, particularly in the early stages of T cell-dependent antigen (TD-Ag) responses. While B cells in IgD-deficient mice can still enter the germinal center and engage in antibody affinity maturation, the efficiency of this process is reduced. The absence of IgD leads to a decrease in the number of peripheral B cells, suggesting that IgD might play a role in maintaining B cell homeostasis. IgD is thought to promote the initiation and efficient conduct of immune responses through its interactions with immune cells.
