Target Information

Elevated levels of homocysteine are closely linked to cardiovascular diseases and are a significant risk factor for atherosclerosis and thrombosis. For instance, studies have shown that regulating CBS (cystathionine-β-synthase) activity can markedly reduce plasma homocysteine levels, thereby lessening the risk of cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine further worsens atherosclerosis by triggering endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) and inducing programmed cell death (PCD). In mice with hyperhomocysteinemia, the liver displays notable fatty liver and fibrosis, which are linked to disruptions in the biosynthesis pathways of cholesterol and triglycerides. Additionally, homocysteine activates autophagy by inhibiting the expression of CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), leading to liver cell damage.
