Target Information
Vigilin is believed to play a role in cellular sterol metabolism, potentially protecting cells from excessive cholesterol accumulation. In mice, vigilin is widely expressed in the liver and primarily located in the cytoplasm. It regulates the secretion of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) by controlling the translation of ApoB mRNA. In mouse models of obesity or insulin resistance, vigilin expression in the liver significantly increases and is positively correlated with plasma levels of triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids, and cholesterol. Overexpression of vigilin raises plasma triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids while reducing triglyceride levels in the liver. In contrast, vigilin knockdown leads to decreased levels of these lipids, thereby inhibiting the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
