Target Information

Heparin Cofactor II (HC-II) is a thrombin inhibitor that is activated by glycosaminoglycans, specifically heparin or dermatan sulfate. In the presence of dermatan sulfate, HC-II becomes the main thrombin inhibitor, replacing antithrombin III (AT). It also inhibits chymotrypsin independently of glycosaminoglycans. In mice, the function of HC-II is intricately linked to anticoagulation and the regulation of vascular repair processes. Mouse models have shown that a deficiency in HC-II leads to accelerated thrombosis following arterial endothelial injury and contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and neointimal formation.
