Target Information

Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HBEGF) is a growth factor that exerts its effects through the EGFR, ERBB2, and ERBB4 receptors. It is essential for proper cardiac valve formation and heart function and promotes the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. HBEGF may play a role in macrophage-mediated cellular proliferation and is mitogenic for fibroblasts but not for endothelial cells. It binds to the EGF receptor/EGFR with greater affinity than EGF itself and is a much stronger mitogen for smooth muscle cells compared to EGF. Additionally, it serves as a receptor for diphtheria toxin. In mice, HBEGF is involved in various functions including cardiac and neural development, intestinal function, immune responses, and cancer. Research indicates that HBEGF supports the integrity of the intestinal barrier by regulating the expression of tight junction proteins like ZO-1 and occludin. Mice lacking HBEGF experience intestinal barrier dysfunction, making them more susceptible to enteritis and infections.
