Target Information
Hemojuvelin functions as a coreceptor for bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), enhancing BMP signaling to regulate hepcidin (HAMP) expression and maintain iron homeostasis. In mice, hemojuvelin's primary role is to influence hepcidin expression by synergizing with the BMP signaling pathway, thereby ensuring proper iron regulation. Additionally, it is involved in inflammation, tissue-specific expression, and interactions with other proteins. Studies have demonstrated that mice lacking hemojuvelin (Hjv-/-) experience significant iron overload, characterized by increased iron accumulation in the liver, pancreas, and heart, while iron levels in macrophages are decreased.
