Target Information

Heme oxygenase 2 (HO-2) facilitates the oxidative cleavage of heme at the alpha-methene bridge carbon, releasing it as carbon monoxide (CO) and producing biliverdin IXalpha, while also liberating the central heme iron as ferrous iron. Under conditions of oxidative stress, HO-2 helps reduce oxidative damage and enhances cell survival. For instance, HO-2-deficient mice exhibit elevated oxidative damage markers, such as increased hemoglobin and ferritin content, when exposed to hyperoxia (95% O2), without a significant rise in antioxidant enzyme activity. In an intracerebral hemorrhage model, HO-2-deficient mice display larger brain lesion volumes, increased brain edema, and neuronal death, along with elevated ROS levels and vascular dysfunction.
