Target Information
Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) catalyzes the oxidative cleavage of heme at the alpha-methene bridge carbon, releasing it as carbon monoxide (CO), and generates biliverdin IXalpha while liberating central heme iron as ferrous iron. It plays a protective role against programmed cell death, with its cytoprotective effect relying on its ability to catabolize free heme, thereby preventing it from sensitizing cells to apoptosis. In mice, HO-1 serves multiple functions, including iron recycling, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and immunomodulation, and has implications in various disease models. As a crucial antioxidant enzyme, HO-1 protects cells from oxidative stress by producing antioxidants like biliverdin. Studies have demonstrated that overexpressing HO-1 can reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury, improve cardiomyocyte survival rates, and provide neuroprotection in cerebral ischemia models. Additionally, HO-1 can inhibit apoptosis through the production of carbon monoxide.
