Target Information
Heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein (Hspa8) is a molecular chaperone involved in various cellular processes, including protecting the proteome from stress, folding and transporting newly synthesized polypeptides, chaperone-mediated autophagy, activating proteolysis of misfolded proteins, forming and dissociating protein complexes, and presenting antigens. It is crucial for the protein quality control system, ensuring proper protein folding, re-folding of misfolded proteins, and directing proteins for degradation. In mice, HSPA8 is involved in regulating cell death, protein stability, embryonic development, tumor progression, sperm survival, and cell cycle and metabolic regulation. In mouse muscle, Mettl21 modifies HSPA8 by methylating lysine 561, which enhances its stability. This modification increases HSPA8 protein levels in slow muscle and boosts its role in chaperone-mediated autophagy.
