Target Information
Glycogen Phosphorylase, Liver is an allosteric enzyme responsible for catalyzing the rate-limiting step in glycogen breakdown, specifically the phosphorolytic cleavage of glycogen to generate glucose-1-phosphate. It plays a vital role in maintaining glucose homeostasis at both cellular and organismal levels. In mice, the primary function of Pygl is to help regulate blood glucose levels and energy metabolism by breaking down glycogen to produce glucose. Impairment in Pygl function can lead to severe metabolic disorders, such as glycogen storage disease type VI and other related conditions. During fasting, Pygl is one of the key enzymes responsible for sustaining blood glucose levels. Without Pygl, mice are unable to effectively break down glycogen to supply glucose, leading to a significant decrease in blood glucose levels during fasting.
