Target Information
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a group of enzymes from a multi-gene family found extensively in mammalian cells, primarily participating in detoxification and antioxidant processes within the cell. GSTs are key phase II metabolic enzymes, mainly responsible for conjugating glutathione (GSH) with exogenous or endogenous electrophilic substrates to form non-toxic glutathione-S-conjugates, which help eliminate toxic substances and metabolites from cells, thus protecting them from damage. In mice, GSTs are prevalent in tissues such as the liver, brain, heart, and kidneys, and are found in the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and microsomes of the liver. Structurally, GSTs typically have a catalytic region (GSH binding region) made up of two subunits, each containing a catalytic tyrosine residue that directly interacts with the thiol group of GSH.
