Target Information

Glutaredoxin exhibits glutathione-disulfide oxidoreductase activity when combined with NADPH and glutathione reductase, effectively reducing low molecular weight disulfides and proteins. In mice, the primary role of glutathione reductase (Grx) includes regulating mitochondrial function, maintaining redox balance, and participating in various physiological and pathological processes. In the brain, Grx1 expression is crucial for mitochondrial function. Research has shown that the absence of Grx1 significantly reduces the activity of mitochondrial complex I in the brain, leading to symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. Additionally, the impact of Grx1 loss varies between male and female mice. For instance, under a high-fat diet, female mice lacking Grx1 experience accelerated obesity and atherosclerosis, while male mice exhibit the opposite response.
