Target Information
Glutamate receptor 2 is an ionotropic glutamate receptor that operates as a ligand-gated cation channel, activated by L-glutamate and glutamatergic agonists like alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), quisqualic acid, and kainic acid. Mice lacking the Gria2 gene exhibit significant deficits in learning and memory. For example, in tasks involving stimulus-reward learning, Gria2 knockout mice struggle to form normal stimulus-reward associations and display abnormal performance in conditioned approach and tool transfer tasks. Additionally, these knockout mice show enhanced NMDA receptor-independent long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus, related to abnormal calcium influx.
