Target Information
The "Solute carrier family 2, facilitated glucose transporter member 2" (SLC2A2) is a hexose transporter responsible for facilitating the transport of glucose, fructose, and galactose. It is believed to facilitate the bidirectional movement of glucose across the plasma membrane of liver cells and plays a crucial role in glucose uptake by beta cells. In mice, SLC2A2 is integral to the process of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in pancreatic β cells. The expression of SLC2A2 is closely linked to the function of β cells, and a reduction in its expression results in impaired insulin secretion and reduced glucose tolerance. Studies have shown that metformin can enhance glucose uptake in the intestines of mice on a high-fat diet, with a more pronounced effect observed in mice with lower SLC2A2 expression levels.
