Target Information

Solute carrier family 2, facilitated glucose transporter member 1, also known as Glucose Transporter 1 (GLUT1), is a facilitative glucose transporter responsible for constitutive or basal glucose uptake. GLUT1 is the primary glucose transporter in the brain, facilitating the transport of glucose from the blood to brain tissue to supply energy to brain cells. Research has demonstrated that the absence of GLUT1 in mice results in symptoms akin to human GLUT1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1-DS), including epilepsy, motor dysfunction, and cognitive deficits. Moreover, GLUT1's role in brain endothelial cells is crucial for maintaining the cerebrovascular barrier and promoting cerebral angiogenesis; its absence can lead to significant cerebrovascular defects.
