Target Information

Glucagon plays a key role in glucose metabolism and homeostasis. It regulates blood glucose by increasing gluconeogenesis and decreasing glycolysis. It is a counterregulatory hormone of insulin, raises plasma glucose levels in response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia. It plays an important role in initiating and maintaining hyperglycemic conditions in diabetes. Glucagon not only affects blood sugar levels, but is also closely related to the function of β cells. For example, studies have shown that in mouse pancreatic islets, glucagon secreted by alpha cells directly regulates the function of β cells in a paracrine manner.
