Target Information

Gamma-Glutamyltransferase 1 (GGT1) is an enzyme primarily found on liver cell membranes, with the key role of catalyzing the breakdown of extracellular glutathione (GSH). It decomposes glutathione into glutamate, cysteine, and γ-glutamyl, making these components available for cellular use. This process is crucial for maintaining intracellular glutathione levels, the most vital antioxidant in mammalian cells, which protects against oxidative stress. GGT1 is also involved in regulating the oxidative stress response. Research indicates that while GGT1 functions under normal physiological conditions, it may also exacerbate oxidative stress by catalyzing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in specific situations.
