Target Information

Galectin-9 is known for its binding affinity to galactosides and has a strong affinity for the Forssman pentasaccharide. It enhances bactericidal activity in infected macrophages by activating them and promoting IL1B secretion, which limits intracellular bacterial growth. In mice, the functions of Galectin-9 are multifaceted, involving roles in immunomodulation, cell apoptosis, anti-tumor effects, and the regulation of inflammation and fibrosis. It influences T cells and natural killer (NK) cell functions by interacting with the Tim-3 receptor. For instance, in mouse models, Galectin-9 can suppress the formation of Th17 cells, encourage the induction of regulatory T cells (Treg), and improve the symptoms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
