Target Information

Free fatty acid receptor 3 is a G protein-coupled receptor activated by short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are key products of dietary fiber digestion. This receptor plays a significant role in regulating whole-body energy balance and intestinal immunity. In omnivorous mammals, SCFAs such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate are mainly produced by the gut microbiome through the metabolism of dietary fibers. In mice, FFAR3 contributes to energy metabolism, insulin secretion, intestinal hormone regulation, cardiovascular function, and neural regulation. Its functions can be complex in certain disease models. For instance, in an atherosclerosis model, FFAR3 knockout mice exhibit a greater tendency towards intimal hyperplasia.
