Target Information
Forkhead box protein P1 (Foxp1) functions as a transcriptional repressor. It can collaborate with CTBP1 to synergistically repress transcription, although CTBP1 is not essential for this process. Foxp1 is crucial for mouse brain development, particularly in neuronal migration and morphogenesis. Research indicates that knocking out Foxp1 results in defects in neuronal migration within the mouse cerebral cortex, leading to the emergence of ectopic neurons in the deep cortical layers, while the neuronal differentiation process remains unaffected. In certain brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, the absence of Foxp1 causes cognitive and learning impairments, resembling symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability. These symptoms include reduced social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and memory deficits.
