Target Information

Follistatin directly binds to activin, acting as an antagonist, and serves as a specific inhibitor of the biosynthesis and secretion of pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). In mice, the role of Follistatin is primarily linked to its function as an inhibitor of Myostatin. Myostatin, part of the TGF-β family, typically restricts muscle mass by inhibiting skeletal muscle growth. Follistatin promotes muscle growth and enhances muscle strength by binding to Myostatin and inhibiting its activity. In mice, Follistatin can significantly increase muscle mass and strength; for instance, overexpressing Follistatin in mouse skeletal muscle can lead to a fourfold increase in muscle mass.
