Flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) is a crucial liver enzyme responsible for the oxygenation of numerous nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds, including drugs and dietary substances. It plays a significant role in the metabolism of trimethylamine (TMA) by converting it into the metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). In mice, FMO3 is involved in various functions, such as drug and cholesterol metabolism, protection of hepatocytes, metabolic diseases, interaction with intestinal microbiota, atherosclerosis, gender differences, autophagy, and liver aging. Notably, in mice, FMO3 expression exhibits gender differences, with significantly higher levels observed in the liver of female mice compared to male mice.
