Fibulin-1 is integrated into fibronectin-containing matrix fibers and may facilitate cell adhesion and migration along protein fibers within the extracellular matrix (ECM). It is potentially significant for certain developmental processes and aids in the supramolecular organization of ECM architecture, particularly within basement membranes. In mice, fibrinogen-1 plays a critical role in vascular development, especially in maintaining the stability of capillaries and endothelial cells. Mice lacking fibrinogen-1 experience severe vascular abnormalities, including the dilation and rupture of capillaries and small blood vessels, leading to significant bleeding and embryonic death. During embryonic development, the absence of fibrinogen-1 results in irregular kidney and lung development, such as tubular malformations and delayed alveolar development, which are linked to vascular and ventilation dysfunctions.
