Target Information
Fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) plays a crucial role in regulating cell survival, division, angiogenesis, differentiation, and migration. It functions as a potent mitogen in vitro by acting as a ligand for FGFR1 and integrins. In the presence of heparin, FGF1 binds to FGFR1, causing its dimerization and activation via sequential autophosphorylation on tyrosine residues. These phosphorylated sites serve as docking points for interacting proteins, thereby activating several signaling pathways. In mice, FGF1 is involved in numerous functions, including muscle regeneration, regulation of insulin secretion, neural development and protection, anti-inflammatory effects, and maintaining blood pressure. In diabetic mouse models, FGF1 enhances insulin secretion through both central and peripheral pathways.
