Target Information
Ferritin heavy chain (FTH1) plays a crucial role in storing iron in a soluble, non-toxic, and readily accessible form, ensuring iron homeostasis. In mice, FTH1's functions extend beyond iron storage and regulation to include roles in oxidative stress, cell death, and the pathological mechanisms of various diseases. In a high-fat diet-induced mouse model of atherosclerosis, silencing FTH1 has been shown to reduce the expression of inflammatory factors and mitigate atherosclerotic lesions. Additionally, upregulation of FTH1 is linked to the early onset of osteoporosis in a mouse model of hereditary hemochromatosis.
