Target Information

Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5 (FABP5) functions as an intracellular carrier for long-chain fatty acids and related active lipids, such as endocannabinoids, aiding in the regulation of their metabolism and actions. Beyond its role in cytosolic transport, FABP5 specifically delivers certain fatty acids from the cytosol to the nucleus, where they activate nuclear receptors. In mice, FABP5 is expressed in the brain and is crucial for transporting polyunsaturated fatty acids, like DHA, from the blood-brain barrier (BBB) into the brain, which is vital for maintaining adequate DHA levels there. Mice lacking FABP5 show reduced levels of inflammatory factors and an increase in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, indicating that FABP5 may influence disease resistance by modulating immune responses.
