Target Information
Fatty acid-binding protein 1 (FABP-1), also known as mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase, plays a crucial role in catalyzing the irreversible transamination of the L-tryptophan metabolite L-kynurenine into kynurenic acid (KA). As part of the malate-aspartate shuttle, it is essential for maintaining the intracellular NAD(H) redox balance. FABP-1 is important for facilitating metabolite exchange between the mitochondria and cytosol and is involved in amino acid metabolism. It also plays a significant role in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Research has shown that mice lacking the FABP1 gene display reduced liver triglyceride accumulation and less liver inflammation when on a high-fat diet. This suggests that FABP1 may contribute to the progression of NAFLD by influencing fatty acid uptake and oxidation.
