Target Information
Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1, also known as Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 3, is a serine/threonine kinase that plays a critical role in the MAP kinase signal transduction pathway. The two mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) involved, MAPK1/ERK2 and MAPK3/ERK1, are key players in the MAPK/ERK cascade. The MEK1-ERK1 signaling pathway is significantly involved in cardiac hypertrophy. Research has demonstrated that MEK1 transgenic mice display focused hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes without the development of cardiomyopathy or heart failure, indicating that the ERK1/2 signaling pathway may serve a protective function in adaptive cardiac hypertrophy.
