Target Information

Excitatory amino acid transporter 1 is a sodium-dependent, high-affinity transporter that facilitates the uptake of L-glutamate, as well as L-aspartate and D-aspartate. It operates as a symporter, transporting one amino acid molecule along with two or three Na+ ions and one proton, while simultaneously counter-transporting one K+ ion. In the nervous system, SLC1A3 plays a crucial role as a glutamate transporter, moving glutamate from the extracellular space into the cell to regulate neurotransmitter levels. This function is vital for maintaining normal electrophysiological activity in neurons. For instance, in mouse models, a deficiency in SLC1A3 results in an abnormal increase in postsynaptic current, impacting learning and memory abilities.
