Target Information
Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) promotes the growth of various epidermal and epithelial tissues both in vivo and in vitro, as well as certain fibroblasts in cell culture. As a magnesiotropic hormone, it enhances magnesium reabsorption in the renal distal convoluted tubule by interacting with the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and activating the magnesium channel TRPM6. EGF and its related factors are crucial in processes such as mouse skin development, wound healing, inflammation regulation, cancer formation, and other physiological and pathological functions. Mice lacking EGFR show severe skin abnormalities, including irregular hair development and epidermal thickening. EGFR signaling is vital for maintaining skin barrier function and providing antimicrobial defense. Inhibitors of EGFR can cause impaired skin barrier functionality and an increased inflammatory response.
