Target Information
Desmocollin-1 is a key component of desmosome cell-cell junctions, essential for positively regulating cellular adhesion. It is crucial for maintaining desmosome adhesion strength between the granular layers of the epidermis, thereby influencing epidermal proliferation and differentiation. Mice lacking Dsc1 (Dsc1-/-) exhibit epidermal fragility characterized by barrier defects and abnormal differentiation. This fragility leads to lesions similar to IgA pemphigus in newborn mice and progresses into a chronic skin condition in older mice. Desmocollin-1 is expressed in the upper epidermal layers, including the stratum granulosum, but is absent in proliferating basal keratinocytes. However, studies suggest that Dsc1 can function as a desmosomal component in basal keratinocytes without impacting their differentiation or early skin formation.
