Target Information

Desmin is a muscle-specific type III intermediate filament essential for maintaining proper muscular structure and function. It plays a vital role in preserving the structure of sarcomeres by interconnecting the Z-disks and forming myofibrils. Desmin links these myofibrils to the sarcolemmal cytoskeleton, as well as to the nucleus and mitochondria, thereby providing strength to muscle fibers during activity. In mice, desmin is integral to both the structural and functional aspects of muscle, and its absence or abnormalities can lead to various muscle and heart diseases. Abnormal accumulation or dysfunction of desmin is closely associated with cardiomyopathy. Desmin-deficient mice exhibit heart fibrosis, cardiomyocyte death, and dysfunction, mirroring the pathological characteristics of human desmin-related cardiomyopathy.
