Target Information

Beta-defensin 2 is known for its bactericidal activity. As part of the β-defensin family, these peptides possess broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, capable of disrupting the cell membranes of bacteria and fungi, thus inhibiting their growth and reproduction. β-defensins also provide significant antimicrobial effects in the gastrointestinal tract, potentially contributing to the maintenance of intestinal barrier function. These peptides exhibit highly conserved properties across different species, implying similar functions across these species. For instance, members of the mouse β-defensin family are specifically expressed in the reproductive system, suggesting their involvement in particular physiological functions.
