Target Information
Death-associated protein kinase 1 is a calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine kinase that plays a role in various cellular signaling pathways related to cell survival, apoptosis, and autophagy. It manages signals for both type I apoptotic and type II autophagic cell deaths, depending on the cellular environment. By activating apoptotic signaling pathways, DAPK1 promotes apoptosis. Research has demonstrated that DAPK1 is crucial in neuronal cell death; its overexpression can lead to increased neuronal apoptosis, whereas DAPK1-deficient mice exhibit improved learning and spatial memory abilities. DAPK1 induces neuronal cell death by phosphorylating NDRG2 and exerts its effects through NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity in conditions such as cerebral ischemia.
