Target Information

Cytochrome P450 2E1 is a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase involved in fatty acid metabolism. It functions by utilizing molecular oxygen, inserting one oxygen atom into a substrate, while reducing the other to a water molecule, with the necessary electrons supplied by NADPH via cytochrome P450 reductase (NADPH-hemoprotein reductase). In mice, Cyp2e1 plays a critical role in regulating oxidative stress, mediating the toxic effects of metabolites, contributing to obesity and metabolic disorders, and interacting with other enzymes. As a crucial oxidase, it participates in the metabolism of various chemicals, including alcohol and low molecular weight toxic compounds. By catalyzing the transformation of substrates into more polar metabolites, Cyp2e1 induces oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Overexpression of Cyp2e1 in mouse hepatocytes significantly elevates ROS levels and lipid peroxidation, leading to hepatocyte apoptosis and liver fibrosis.
