Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 is a part of cytochrome c oxidase, the final enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain that facilitates oxidative phosphorylation. In mice, MTCO2 contributes to the structure of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, supports neuronal survival, aids in energy metabolism after brain injury, and is involved in tumorigenesis. Alterations in its expression can impact mitochondrial function, cellular metabolism, and disease progression. Research has demonstrated that MTCO2 expression in mice is closely linked to the performance of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. For instance, in a lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) mouse model, the knockdown or knockout of MRPL12 resulted in a substantial reduction in MTCO2 expression, highlighting MTCO2's essential role in sustaining mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.
