Target Information

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine-protein kinase crucial for neuronal cell cycle arrest and differentiation. It may play a role in apoptotic cell death in neurodegenerative diseases by inducing abortive cell cycle re-entry. Mice lacking Cdk5 exhibit severe structural abnormalities in the cerebral cortex, such as an inversion of the six cortical layers. Typically, medial neurons migrate first, followed by lateral neurons; however, in Cdk5-deficient mice, lateral neurons reach the cortical surface prematurely. Additionally, the absence of Cdk5 leads to disorganized stratification of the cerebral cortex, including abnormal separation of the preplate and the subplate.
