Target Information
Corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) is a primary transport protein for glucocorticoids and progestins in the blood across nearly all vertebrate species. In mice, CBG's function extends beyond regulating the free concentration of cortisol, playing roles in HPA axis signaling, stress response, adrenal function, and potentially metabolic regulation. Mice lacking CBG display abnormalities in HPA axis function, including elevated levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalamus and altered secretion of adrenocortical hormones. Additionally, CBG deficiency leads to changes in cortisol activity within the hippocampus, which may impact cognitive function.
